How a Coworkers family death triggered me

I work in a very small department in my company. I work 4–10 hour days, with 3 of those days working with 1 other person. I get along really well with this person. In fact, we talk an awful lot about stuff. It’s funny, because outside of work we would never even cross paths. But here we are working together.

He had mentioned to me that he had a couple of brothers. One of them in particular doesn’t exactly follow the straight and narrow path so to speak. I know this because my coworker was talking about him.

As things turned out, my coworker’s brother was the target of a killing. Once the victim was identified, all of the family gathered in front of the media and proceeded to talk about the victim. He was spoken about in glowing terms.

Only problem was it wasn’t the whole truth. His family spoke of him as a fine upstanding member of the community, even though he wasn’t. They made it like he was a fine upstanding member of the community who tragically passed away.

And I know he wasn’t from talking to my coworker.

He was not exactly walking the straight and narrow so to speak, and it cost him his life. When someone unexpectedly dies, it seems that the person in question suddenly is the most wonderful person in the world, even though they are not.
